The WIO-COMPAS Programme marked a significant milestone with its first Portuguese certification event, held in Maputo, Mozambique, from April 14-18, 2025. Funded by JNCC, this event aimed to bolster marine conservation capacity in the region.
The week began with a workshop gathering 20 participants, including Eugenio Manhica, Director of Conservation at ANAC, and representatives from Biofund. The workshop’s primary objective was to raise awareness about the WIO-COMPAS Programme among Mozambican partners, co-management agencies, MPA professionals, and other stakeholders, while also introducing the certification process to potential candidates. Open discussions allowed participants to share their perspectives on certification barriers and interests, helping to shape future Portuguese-language WIO-COMPAS events.
A highlight of the workshop was the presentation of workplace case studies by three WIO-COMPAS candidates, providing valuable insights into their experiences. The certification assessment included a thorough review of each candidate’s competencies. Portfolios showcasing significant contributions and expertise in MPA management were presented. Candidates also underwent written assessments, face-to-face interviews, and peer discussions to validate their skills and knowledge.
Midweek, a field trip to Inhaca Island and a visit to Maputo National Park offered participants firsthand experiences with local marine ecosystems and conservation practices, enhancing the workshop’s practical application. This inaugural event represents a crucial step in empowering marine professionals in Mozambique and building a collaborative network for future initiatives.
