Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) organizes and supports periodic regional training workshops on various themes relevant to WIO MPAs. This activity falls within the framework of WIOMSA’s strategy and the long-term regional MPA capacity building strategy.
The MPA trainings offered in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) include the following.
MPA Managers Course
The course provides MPA professionals with a wide understanding of the tools and techniques available to address MPA management and to improve their technical and management skills.
Strategic Adaptive Management (SAM)
The SAM program equips MPA managers with the tools to actively manage marine parks through developing SMART management objectives, testing progress using monitoring data, making management decisions to promote progress and checking effectiveness of management using data.
Management Effectiveness Assessment Trainings
In partnership with Protected Area authorities, WIOMSA periodically organizes management effective trainings using recognised tools such as The Integrated Management Effectiveness Tool (IMET), the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT), How is Your MPA Doing among others.
