Mafia Island, Tanzania – April 11, 2025 – The Marine Parks and Reserves Unit (MPRU) marked a significant milestone as five staff members earned certifications in Rescue Diving and Emergency First Response (EFR), following an intensive two-week training program in Mafia Island. This initiative, facilitated by Plongeurs Du Monde (Divers of the World), underscores MPRU’s commitment to strengthening its operational capabilities and enhancing the protection of Tanzania’;s precious marine ecosystems.
The dedicated MPRU staff who successfully completed the rigorous training include Daniel Mallya, Hashim Kilawi, and Ailas Lema from Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP), Maria Pentzel from MPRU Headquarters, and Kabodo from Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park (TACMP). In a groundbreaking achievement, Masanja Joram who is currently working with Mwambao Coastal Community Network, together with 6 community members participated in the first-ever PADI-certified Eco-Guide Specialty training, held right here in Mafia, Tanzania. This specialized training, a global first, will empower Mr. Joram to promote coral restoration, eco-tourism and ensure sustainable marine interactions, aligning perfectly with MPRU’s vision for responsible marine resource management.
This capacity-building initiative represents a crucial step forward in equipping MPRU staff with essential skills in underwater monitoring, emergency response, coral restoration and eco- tourism guidance. It reflects the institution’s unwavering dedication to the continuous professional development of its staff, which ultimately translates to more effective protection and stewardship of Tanzania’s rich marine resources.
The certification ceremony was attended by MIMP Warden Mr. Amin and staff member Shamte, who expressed their pride in the participants; achievements and their dedication to growth. Initiatives like this not only provide staff with life-saving and ecological expertise but also reinforce MPRU’s position as a leading agency in marine conservation efforts in the Western Indian Ocean region. The MPRU extends its congratulations to all the participants and reaffirms its commitment to investing in its staff, their passion, and the protection of our invaluable marine resources.
