About WIOMPAN

The Western Indian Ocean Marine Protected Areas Management Network (WIOMPAN) is a network of MPA practitioners in the Western Indian Ocean ( WIO) region. The Network brings together MPA practitioners from 10 countries in the WIO – Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Comoros, Seychelles, Mauritius, Somalia, Madagascar and Reunion (France). The Network was established to facilitate exchanges between WIO MPA practitioners to deal with common issues in different local contexts. MPAs in the WIO context include all formal marine protected and managed areas under government, communities (LMMAs) and privately managed MPAs.

Governance and leadership

The day-to-day functions of the WIOMPAN Network are performed by the Executive Committee consisting of the following office bearers: a chairman, a vice-chairman, the secretary, a treasurer and five ex-officio members appointed by the members. WIOMPAN members elect the officials at the first Annual General Meeting. The WIOMSA Secretariat provides technical support to the Executive Committee.

The WIOMPAN Constitution

We are pleased to announce the availability of the WIOMPAN Constitution. This foundational document outlines our mission, values, and operational guidelines. This document serves as a vital resource for understanding the principles that govern WIOMPAN and the framework for our activities; with a particular emphasis on strengthening the management effectiveness of Marine Protected and Conserved Areas.
