In the framework of the Varuna Biodiversity Project’s annual call for companionship, a transformative regional peer-to-peer exchange took place from June 4th to 11th, bringing together six individuals from Mauritius and Madagascar. This group included Reef Conservation staff, Anse La Raie Voluntary Marine Conservation Area (VMCA) community members, and experienced members from the MIHARI Network.
The MIHARI Network, which consists of locally managed marine areas (LMMAs) in Madagascar, plays a crucial role in facilitating local experience sharing and capacity building while also exerting national influence. Reef Conservation dedicates a holistic, ridge-to-reef approach to conservation and promotes the sustainable development of the Mauritian coastal and marine environment through science-based programs.
This exchange aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of LMMAs, community engagement, sustainable income opportunities, VMCA reporting, and sustainable financial strategies. Collaborating with NGOs such as Conservation International, Community Centred Conservation, Blue Ventures, Wildlife Conservation Society, and World Wildlife Fund, the team explored the LMMA Fizamiti in Antsapano in Ambanja and Fimiza in the Corridor de 7 Baies in Diego. These visits provided valuable insights into community-driven conservation and alternative livelihoods.
The exchange underscored the importance of involving local communities in every stage of VMCA management. By engaging with local fishers and community members, the team learned about their challenges and aspirations, paving the way for more inclusive and effective conservation strategies.
Equipped with newfound knowledge and innovative approaches, the participants returned to Mauritius empowered and committed to advancing marine conservation. This initiative was made possible by the Varuna_AMP Project, implemented by Réserves Naturelles de France with the French Biodiversity Office and coordinated by Expertise France for the French Development Agency. Reef Conservation extends its gratitude to the Mauritius Commercial Bank for its continuous support.
