Empowering Coastal Communities: Seaweed Farming Training on Mafia Island

Mafia Island Marine Park, in collaboration with stakeholders WWF through the BAF project and JICA, has successfully trained 170 seaweed farmers from eight villages within the park. These villages include Chemchem (6), Chole (20), Jibondo (90), Juani (20), Kiegeani (3), Kungwi (15), Miburani (5), and Mlongo (11). The training sessions were conducted at different times from May 2023 to July 2024.

Comprehensive Training for Seaweed Farmers

The farmers received training on best farming practices and seaweed value addition, including producing soap and body oil. The training methodology included theoretical lessons, practical interactions, and field visits. Notably, 20 seaweed farmers and two Community-Based Trainers were taken to Msichoke Seaweed Group in Mlingotini, Bagamoyo, for an immersive learning experience.

Additionally, 60 farmers from Jibondo were trained under JICA’s support, while the remaining farmers received training on best farming practices and seaweed value addition through the BAF project with WWF.

Impact on the Community

This initiative has not only enhanced the skills of local seaweed farmers but also empowered them to add value to their produce, thereby increasing their income and improving their livelihoods. The collaborative efforts of Mafia Island Marine Park, WWF, and JICA have significantly contributed to sustainable development in the region.
