Learning exchange for  LMMA leaders, Government and MPA practitioners  from Madagascar in Kenya.

Blue Ventures and its partners, with support from the Blue Action Fund and Green Climate Fund, are leading efforts to protect and restore the unique biodiversity of the Barren Isles in western Madagascar. This initiative not only safeguards vital marine and coastal ecosystems but also strengthens the socio-ecological resilience of local communities, helping them adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.

As part of this project, Blue Ventures Madagascar organised a regional learning exchange from 20–26 April 2025, bringing together 12 community leaders, marine protected area (MPA) practitioners, and government representatives from across Madagascar. The exchange took place in Mombasa (Kwale), Kenya, and was co-organised with Blue Ventures Kenya, in collaboration with Reefolution and local coastal communities.

The programme began with an exchange workshop focused on co-management systems, sharing best practices and identifying common challenges faced by marine conservation stakeholders in both Kenya and Madagascar. Participants then engaged with the Kwale County Beach Management Network (KCBN), exploring the vital roles of government, communities, and partner organisations in effective marine governance. A field visit to Muandudu offered valuable insights into local climate adaptation initiatives, such as mangrove restoration, nursery maintenance, and sustainable beekeeping.

This exchange culminated in a set of concrete action points and recommendations to strengthen community-led marine resource management in Madagascar, drawing inspiration from the Kenyan experience.
