Recognizing the urgent need to mobilize national and regional efforts for coral reef recovery, adaptation, and restoration, the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA) launched the first-ever Coral Festival. Held on Friday, April 26th, at Camion Hall under the theme “Celebrating the Colours of the Sea,” the festival aims to raise awareness about the importance of coral reefs, marine conservation, and sustainable practices.
A Grand Opening
The two-day festival was officially inaugurated by Designated Minister and Minister for Fisheries and Blue Economy, Mr. Jean-Francois Ferrari. The opening ceremony saw the presence of First Lady Mrs. Linda Ramkalawan, SPGA CEO Cedras, and other high-ranking government and diplomatic officials. Day one gathered experts, enthusiasts, and the local community, marking the festival as a powerful call to action to protect our oceans for future generations.
Fostering Collaboration and Innovation
By bringing together various stakeholders and partners, the festival created a platform for meaningful discussions and exhibitions, aiming to inspire lasting impacts on marine conservation efforts. One of the key highlights was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SPGA and Absa Bank Seychelles. This agreement, signed by CEO Cedras and Absa Seychelles Managing Director Mr. Nazim Mahmood, focuses on collaborative efforts for coral restoration across Marine Protected Areas managed by the Authority.
Educational and Interactive Activities
The festival featured numerous displays, interactive and educational activities, and panel discussions led by experts in marine science. Notable speakers included Dr. Nirmal Shah, Mr. Chris Mason-Parker, Ms. Sophie Berlouis, Mr. Rodney Bonne, and Mr. Rodney Quatre. Their insights and expertise highlighted the critical role of coral reefs and the urgent need for conservation measures.
Engaging Local and Regional Partners
The Coral Festival saw participation from local and regional collaborators and partners, including MACCE BCM Division, Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF), SeyCCAT (Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust), Nature Seychelles, Absa Bank, MCSS (Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles), Wise Oceans, WIOMSA (Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association), and the United Nations Development Program – Seychelles and Mauritius (UNDP).
Coral Outplanting Event
Day two of the festival centered around a mass coral outplanting activity at the Port Launay Marine National Park, in collaboration with Absa Bank Seychelles. The event kicked off with keynote messages from Minister Flavien Joubert, responsible for Agriculture, Climate Change, and Environment, as well as encouraging messages from CEO Cedras and Managing Director Mr. Mahmood.
Successful Coral Planting Initiative
The Research and Marine Operations team of SPGA led the coral outplanting activity, overseeing a group of enthusiastic volunteers from Absa Bank. With the volunteers’ assistance, the team successfully attached coral fragments to 76 reef stars, securing them into the seabed. This effort resulted in a total of 450 coral fragments planted, reinforcing SPGA’s commitment to conservation within marine protected areas and contributing to mitigation and adaptation measures against climate change. This event is the first of two planned for 2024 between the two organizations.
A Step Towards a Sustainable Future
The Coral Festival has set a new benchmark for collaborative marine conservation efforts in Seychelles. By fostering innovation, engaging diverse stakeholders, and promoting sustainable practices, the festival underscores the importance of collective action in preserving our natural ecosystems for future generations.
As we continue to celebrate the vibrant colors of our seas, let this festival be a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and restore the invaluable coral reefs that sustain marine life and support coastal communities.
