Mark your calendars! We’re excited to announce an upcoming webinar focused on Fisheries-Related Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. OECMs are vital for the conservation and sustainable management of marine resources, and this webinar aims to provide valuable insights into their significance and potential in the WIO.
Overview:
During the Nairobi Convention Science to Policy Meeting held in Maputo, Mozambique, on December 5th – 7th, 2023, the importance of fisheries-related OECMs was underscored. Recognizing the diverse array of area-based fisheries management measures in use across the WIO region, there is a growing need to identify and assess these measures for their potential as OECMs. To address this, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is collaborating with the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) to facilitate knowledge exchange and stakeholder discussions on fisheries-related OECMs.
