The marine and coastal ecosystems of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) are crucial for the sustenance of coastal communities, providing food security and livelihoods. However, these ecosystems are under threat from various pressures including rapid urbanization, population growth, and unsustainable resource exploitation, exacerbated by climate change impacts like biodiversity loss and sea-level rise.
Enter the Regenerative Seascapes Project for People, Planet, and Nature (ReSea), a transformative initiative aiming to enhance the resilience of 350,000 individuals—women, men, and youth—across coastal communities in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Comoros, and Madagascar. Anchored within the WIO-led Great Blue Wall Initiative, ReSea seeks to establish a network of regenerative seascapes, fostering sustainability and prosperity.
The program is structured around three core pillars:
- Blue Planet: Focusing on the effective conservation of WIO marine protected areas (MPAs) and locally managed marine areas (LMMA), ensuring equitable and gender-responsive practices for both biodiversity and community well-being.
- Blue Nature: Creating an enabling environment for the adoption of gender-responsive Nature-based solutions to climate change, promoting sustainable management of coastal and marine resources across the WIO region.
- Blue People: Empowering women economically through nature-based value chains, enhancing resilience to climate change impacts in WIO communities.
In collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and supported by Global Affairs Canada, Mission Inclusion is proud to join hands with key stakeholders to drive the Regenerative Seascape project forward. Spanning from March 2023 to December 2025, the project has already commenced, with the Kenya launch taking place on October 24th, 2023, officiated by esteemed dignitaries including Salim Mvurya, CS for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, and H.E Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, Governor of Kilifi County.
