Since its inception in 2016 under the guidance of the Director of the GIP National Marine Nature Reserve of Réunion, the Marine Educational Areas (MEA) project has flourished into a cornerstone of marine conservation and education. Fast forward eight years, and the Reserve stands proudly as the focal point for 5 MEAs spanning across 4 municipalities adjacent to the Marine Protected Area: Saint Paul, Trois Bassins, Saint Leu, and l’Etang Salé.
🐠 Empowering Young Minds: Reef Check Marmailles Workshop A highlight of the initiative is the “Reef Check Marmailles” workshop, where children—known as “marmailles” in Creole—immerse themselves in learning about marine biodiversity and the health of the coral reef in their locality. Guided by Pierre, the seasoned leader of the underwater trail and professional diver, alongside Tévamie, the scientific manager of the natural heritage center, and under the supervision of Kévin, our esteemed Master Swimming Lifeguard leader, and the Reef Check France association, students from each Marine Educational Area embark on an annual inventory of marine fauna.
🔍 Scientific Exploration in Action Equipped with a scientific protocol tailored for primary school students, these budding marine scientists evaluate coral health and monitor fish populations meticulously. Through surveys and data comparison with previous years, they not only gauge the current state of marine ecosystems but also pave the way for targeted conservation efforts.
📝 Partnerships for Progress This educational endeavor, spearheaded by the Marine Nature Reserve of Réunion Island, receives crucial financial backing from the Water Office of Réunion Island, the French Biodiversity Office, and the Underwater Environment and Biology Commission of Réunion Island. With support from the Académie de La Réunion and Reef Check France, this collaborative effort ensures the sustainability and success of the MEA project.
