Regional Training Course on MPA Management
The regional MPA Training course, offered by WIOMSA and partners, targets senior staff from the existing Marine Protected Areas in the WIO region as well as from organizations/programmes/projects that are involved in MPA management. The Course provides MPA professionals with a wide understanding of the tools and techniques available to address MPA management and to improve technical and management skills. The course is also designed to encourage networking between countries in the region through experience sharing, and thus to start to build a strong network of managers who clearly understand the role that their specific site plays within the broader system of MPAs in the region.
Rhodes University Accredited Introductory MPA Management Training Course
The Rhodes University Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science (DIFS) in collaboration with WIOMSA periodically offers a regional Introductory MPA Management Training Course. The course is recognized as a key training intervention particularly for professionals embarking on their careers in the MPA sector and provides a strong foundation for the skills and understandings required for effective MPA management. The course has been adapted for the regional context from the introductory course developed and offered in South Africa for the past 10 years and the regional MPA management training course developed and offered by WIOMSA. The course is strongly recommended for those considering applying for the Western Indian Ocean Certification of Marine Protected Area Professionals (WIO-COMPAS) Level I certification, as the competences covered in the course are closely aligned with those required for certification at this level.
