End violence within Mafia Marine Park

Mafia Marine Park carries out its responsibilities across 12 villages and 5 hamlets surrounding the park. As part of its conservation efforts, one of the key responsibilities is to provide education on ending violence for community members and special groups within society. This program aims to reach 17 villages, 20 primary schools, and 4 secondary schools. Already, Kiegeani Primary School has received training on issues related to gender-based violence (GBV), including its meaning, the different forms it can take, the causes, areas and situations where children are most at risk, how to protect oneself, how to report, and how to support someone who has experienced violence. Providing this kind of education is important to the community for several reasons:

Raising social awareness When children and community members are educated about the dangers of violence, they become ambassadors for change who speak out against such acts and contribute to building a respectful and cohesive society. Protecting children and youth Primary and secondary school students are among the most vulnerable groups to gender-based violence. Education equips them with the knowledge to recognize risks, protect themselves, and report violence early. Contributing to sustainable conservation  A safe and just society is the foundation for effective conservation of marine resources. Empowered youth who stand against violence are more likely to participate positively and with integrity in conservation initiatives.

Preventing long-term impacts Violence can have severe psychological, health, and social consequences. Delivering this education consistently acts as a safeguard, reducing risks and long-term harm.

Reaching all groups in society Beyond schools, awareness will also be extended to VICOBA groups, boda boda (motorcycle) drivers, local gathering spots like coffee stands, religious institutions, and women and youth groups. This ensures the message reaches every corner of the community.

Education on ending violence within Mafia Marine Park is a pillar of both community well-being and sustainable conservation. By raising awareness from an early age, the program helps nurture a generation that values human dignity and actively participates in protecting the environment and its resources for the nation and future generations
