Enhancing MPA Effectiveness: The New MPA Enforcement Toolkit

Effective Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) require strong governance, strategic planning, and active, equitable management to achieve ecological, socio-economic, and cultural goals. Crucially, compliance with regulations ensures the ongoing success of MPAs. A new MPA Enforcement Toolkit has been developed to provide essential knowledge on monitoring, control, surveillance, and enforcement (MCS&E) systems. This toolkit offers marine managers strategies, expert advice, and success stories to enhance MPA effectiveness.

The toolkit details the four key components of MCS&E and their interdependencies. It also presents an overview of various tools and strategies applicable in different MPA contexts. Moreover, it includes a scoping exercise to help managers plan their MCS&E systems. This resource aims to strengthen the capacity of MPAs by addressing the core elements of enforcement. By utilizing this toolkit, managers can better protect marine environments, ensure compliance, and promote sustainable practices within their designated areas.
