ReSea Project Enhancing Effective MPA Management: WIOMPAN Tanzania Workshop

Organized by IUCN as part of the Regenerative Seascapes for People, Nature, and Climate (ReSea) programme, the WIOMPAN Tanzania Workshop took place on February 20–21, 2025, in Dar es Salaam and brought together WIOMPAN members and LMMA practitioners.

The ReSea initiative, implemented by Mission Inclusion (Mi) and IUCN across five Western Indian Ocean countries, is aimed at enhancing the physical and socioeconomic resilience of coastal communities facing climate change. In Tanzania, the project is integrated within the Tanga Pemba seascape and contributes to the African-led Great Blue Wall (GBW) initiative. The GBW strategy is focused on enhancing the management of protected coastal and marine areas (Blue Planet), restoring degraded habitats (Blue Nature), and promoting a regenerative Blue Economy (Blue People).

During the workshop, participants discussed the WIOMPAN National Outlook and examined Tanzania’s commitments while outlining priorities to improve Marine Protected Area (MPA) management by 2030. Attendees addressed WIOMPAN membership registration, identified capacity needs for local stakeholders, and discussed opportunities for LMMA and fisheries officers. They also collaboratively drafted a roadmap to strengthen the WIOMPAN Tanzania chapter’s operational framework. Overall, the workshop laid a solid foundation for advancing the effective management of marine resources in Tanzania’s MPAs.
