The Hifadhi Blu initiative has completed Stage 2 submissions, with 8 out of 29 applicants having submitted their applications for the next phase. These candidates represent a diverse range of marine conservation efforts across the region. Selected sites include two MPAs from South Africa, one from Tanzania, one from Kenya, one from Comoros, and one from Seychelles. Additionally, a co-managed area from Seychelles and a Voluntary Conservation Marine Area (VCMA) from Mauritius are included, expanding the initiative’s scope beyond formal MPAs.
A central theme in the submitted proposals has been the enhancement of co-management strategies to improve community participation in decision-making processes. Many submissions emphasized strengthening ecological and socio-economic monitoring, improving data management systems, and advancing enforcement measures. Marine education and communication efforts have also been key priorities, aiming to raise awareness among tourists, communities, and stakeholders. Further areas of focus included ecosystem restoration, particularly for coral and mangroves, as well as updating or developing management plans and implementing adaptive management strategies.
