The Kenya Chapter of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Protected Area Network (WIOMPAN) convened its National Steering Committee on August 30, 2024, to advance marine conservation efforts in line with global goals such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and SDG 14.5. Building on the outcomes of its inaugural 2023 meeting, the committee reviewed progress and identified actions for the next 12 months to support effective management of Marine Protected and Conserved Areas (MPAs and MPCAs).
Key priorities were outlined across five domains: equipment and infrastructure, capacity building, operations, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning. Highlights include adopting technologies like Earth Ranger for monitoring, developing tourism and ecotourism frameworks, enhancing staff training and mentorship programs, and improving management plans to align with adaptive criteria. Strengthening stakeholder engagement was also emphasized, with plans for public education, financial sustainability models, and partnerships with media and private entities.
The committee also committed to facilitating knowledge sharing through WIOMPAN’s platform and hosting workshops to build capacity, measure management effectiveness, and advance adaptive management strategies. Outputs from this meeting will guide Kenya’s MPA conservation roadmap and inform the chapter’s annual workshop in late 2024.
This collaborative effort underscores WIOMPAN-Kenya’s role in uniting practitioners to address shared challenges and achieve sustainable ocean biodiversity management.
