From September 22 to 26, 2024, MIHARI Network hosted its largest and most impactful event, the National LMMA Forum, in Mahajanga, Madagascar. Over the course of five days, the forum gathered 470 participants from 14 coastal regions, creating a vibrant space for LMMA communities to connect, exchange best practices, and enhance governance skills for marine area management.
The main theme of the event focused on raising awareness about climate change, with the key message being “LMMA leaders resilient in the face of climate change.” Government authorities, including representatives from the Ministries of Fisheries, Environment, and Territorial Planning, acknowledged the pivotal role of LMMAs in sustainable marine governance and emphasized integrating them into national development plans. Regional partners working closely with LMMA communities also participated, showcasing their collaborative efforts during an open day that featured income-generating activities and local initiatives.
The forum concluded on a high note with a colourful carnival celebrating World Marine Day, reflecting the dedication of Madagascar’s coastal communities to preserving marine ecosystems. As MIHARI’s flagship event of the year, this forum reaffirmed the essential contributions of LMMA communities to marine conservation.
WIOMPAN was a key partner at the forum, with several key members in attendance, including core committee representatives and country chapter leaders. WIOMPAN participants included Guy Celestine Rakotovao, Chair of the Madagascar Country Chapter; Deidre de Vos, WIOMPAN Coordinator; Ntombovuyo Madlokazi from the South African Chapter; and Willys Osore, Chair of the Kenya Country Chapter.
