BRIDGES is a research initiative looking at how global changes will affect marine and coastal socio-ecosystems and fisheries dependent communities in the south-west Indian Ocean. Funded at 28 million € for 10 years, led by CNRS, Ifremer and IRD, and involving a growing number of 200 researchers, it will work on improving governance frameworks to achieve more resilience, sustainability and fairness in fisheries management, and a better biodiversity conservation, with a strong focus on area-based management interventions. 5 study sites are at the core of BRIDGES: including 4 coastal sites and a regional pelagic site.
The Program relies on building bridges between science disciplines, practitioners, universities and institutions to promote collaboration, innovation and opportunities for science through equitable partnerships in the region. BRIDGES will support the emergence of a new generation of ocean actors, through capacity and knowledge sharing actions. BRIDGES received recognition and support from the Nairobi Convention COP11 last August.
BRIDGES Research Program kicked off from September 24 to 26 2024 in Reunion Island, bringing together over 120 international participants. They had the opportunity to learn more about BRIDGES, present their work and discuss opportunities for collaboration around key themes.
