Local leaders are the heart of marine conservation in Madagascar. The Ocean Defenders initiative highlights and supports these heroes in preserving the island’s ecosystems. Ten exceptional leaders were selected, each working tirelessly in the face of illegal fishing, habitat destruction, and political hurdles. They represent countless individuals from marine protected areas (MPAs), Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), and VOIs, dedicated to safeguarding Madagascar’s marine biodiversity.
In September 2024, these leaders were introduced at the “Raising the Voices of Ocean Defenders” panel during the MIHARI LMMA 5th National Forum, connecting over 400 LMMAs and government officials.
On September 26, they received certificates as the first cohort of Ocean Defenders Madagascar, named Akio Foty, recognized for their unwavering commitment to marine conservation by the Minister of Fisheries and the Blue Economy.
Supported by Mihari Network and Natiora Defenders, these Ocean Defenders advocate for better recognition, resources, and governance of MPAs and LMMAs. Their journey has just begun. They need improved tools, legal recognition, and more resources to ensure sustainable management of Madagascar’s marine environments. Natiora Defenders remain dedicated to amplifying their voices and supporting their efforts for a healthier, more sustainable ocean.
