Kenya hosted the National Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) Consultation Forum on August 28th and 29th, 2024, in Kwale County. The forum evaluated the current state of LMMAs in the country, identified key challenges and opportunities, and discussed the LMMA expansion strategy developed by CORDIO East Africa. Insights from the forum helped shape Kenya’s national message for incorporation into the WIO LMMA Action Plan and
regional roadmap.
Following this, the WIOMPAN Kenya Chapter National Steering Committee Meeting took place on August 30th, 2024. Building on the inaugural gathering in May 2023, which brought together 86 registered members, the meeting focused on strengthening the chapter, collaborative planning, and reporting on marine protected and conserved areas (MPCA) activities in Kenya.
During the 2024 Annual Meeting, the steering committee led a workshop to identify priority actions aligned with the WIO MPA Outlook recommendations, laying the groundwork for future conservation efforts.
