WIOMPAN Second Regional Meeting Confirmed!

Empowering Collaboration and Learning

WIOMPAN facilitates a collaborative environment where MPA and CMA practitioners can come together, exchange knowledge, and learn from each other’s experiences. With over 100 MPAs and 300 CMAs involved, WIOMPAN operates on a robust networking and partnership approach. It encompasses diverse stakeholders from governmental and non-governmental organizations, ensuring a comprehensive representation of MPA management bodies and CMA leaders.

Collaborative Workshop: Building Capacity for Change

The primary objective of the second regional WIOMPAN workshop is to co-develop a systems-led regional capacity development strategy tailored to the specific needs of the Western Indian Ocean. This strategy aims to refine and articulate existing frameworks through the lens of regional experiences, focusing on enhancing marine conservation efforts aligned with the global 30×30 initiative.

To advance this mission, WIOMPAN, in collaboration with the Blue Nature Alliance (BNA) and WIOMSA, will convene a three-day workshop from October 21st to 24th, 2024. This workshop will bring together 15 WIOMPAN representatives alongside partners from BNA and WIOMSA, with additional practitioners invited based on their expertise in regional capacity building initiatives.

Key Facilitators and Approach

  • Arthur Tuda, Co-facilitator and WIOMSA Executive Director
  • Deidre de Vos, Coordinator and WIOMSA Project Manager
  • Lihla Noori, Co-facilitator, Capacity & Learning, Blue Nature Alliance
  • Karen Grattan, Lead Consultant, Engaging Inquiry

The workshop will adopt a highly engaged, practical approach grounded in systems thinking. Participants will delve into the socio-political and economic complexities surrounding the 30×30 objectives, aiming to build actionable insights and adaptive leadership skills. They will explore system tools, share regional insights, and craft strategic actions to address high leverage challenges in marine conservation.

Vision for Change

By adopting a systemic approach and fostering collaborative learning, WIOMPAN aims to drive transformative change in the management and conservation of marine ecosystems across the Western Indian Ocean. The workshop will not only equip participants with practical tools but also strengthen the network’s capacity to implement strategic actions that resonate globally while addressing local ecosystem challenges.

Conclusion

WIOMPAN’s initiative underscores the critical role of collaboration and knowledge sharing in achieving sustainable marine conservation goals. By harnessing the collective expertise of MPA and CMA practitioners, WIOMPAN is poised to set new standards in marine resource management, paving the way for a more resilient and biodiverse Western Indian Ocean region.

Through ongoing partnerships and strategic initiatives, WIOMPAN continues to inspire and empower marine conservation efforts, demonstrating a commitment to preserving our oceans for future generations.
