In a stride toward marine conservation, a guidebook has been unveiled, illuminating the path for local governments in the Philippines. Crafted around the influential Systematic Conservation Planning (SCP) framework developed by Margules and Pressey in 2000, this guidebook stands as a testament to collaborative efforts, scientific innovation, and a shared vision for a sustainable future.
Unveiling a Unique Guidebook
Unlike any previous publication, this guidebook offers a step-by-step approach to utilizing the SCP framework. Specifically tailored to aid neighboring local governments engaged in inter-local government alliances (equivalent to transboundary networks), the guidebook is a beacon of knowledge, presenting a roadmap for the design and establishment of Marine Protected Area (MPA) networks.
A Vision of Collaborative Conservation
This monumental work is a testament to the collaborative endeavors of A/Prof Rene Abesamis from the University of the Philippines – Marine Science Institute and other dedicated experts. Their efforts were propelled by the USAID funded Fish Right Project (2019-2023). Rooted in the ideals of conservation pioneer Prof Bob Pressey, this project echoes his vision of applying SCP in decentralized and tropical country contexts, a cause he passionately championed in the Coral Triangle during the 2010s.

It includes introductory materials and presentations that have been instrumental in empowering local communities.
