In a ground-breaking initiative, the fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC 5) convened in 2023, uniting regional networks of Marine Protected Area (MPA) managers worldwide. This unprecedented gathering saw prominent networks like SPAW/RAC, MedPAN, NAMPAN, Red Golfo, Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea, WIOMPAN, and RAMPAO join forces. Together, they explored innovative strategies, shared experiences, and forged alliances to advance the creation, management, and connectivity of MPAs.
In a significant stride towards global collaboration, an inspiring Learning Exchange took place in Tarragona, Spain, spearheaded by the Ocean Governance for MPAs initiative. Over 70 dedicated participants from 30+ countries spanning the Atlantic Ocean, Southeast Asia, and Africa converged, exchanging insights on vital topics such as coral reef and mangrove restoration, climate change resilience, marine mammal protection, and cross-border partnerships. Notably, WIOMPAN played a pivotal role, showcasing their commitment to marine preservation.
The pinnacle moment arrived with the launch of the Global MPA Manager Network on the conference’s final day. This trailblazing initiative aims to create a vibrant platform where MPA managers globally can collaborate, synergize efforts, and optimize resources. Their vision? To champion UN goals, drive sustainable development, preserve biodiversity, and combat climate change.
“We firmly believe in promoting and financing a global MPA network. By amplifying the ongoing efforts of existing MPA manager networks, we empower MPA managers worldwide to collaborate effectively, aligning actions with UN objectives for a sustainable, biodiverse, and climate-resilient planet,” declared the leaders at IMPAC 5.”
The IMPAC 5 conference has marked a paradigm shift, fostering a global alliance of passionate marine stewards. Together, they’re steering the course towards a future where our oceans thrive, and marine life flourishes!
