Marine Parks and Reserves Unit (MPRU) in collaboration with Plongeurs du Monde facilitated the training of eight Marine Conservation Wardens from MPRU’s four Marine Parks and Reserves centers namely; DMRs – Dar es Salaam Marine Reserves System, MBREMP – Mnazi Bay – Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park, TACMP- Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park and MIMP- Mafia Island Marine Park. Plongeurs du Monde is a French based non-profit organization that works with Mafia Island Diving Center. The MPRU Divers Capacity Building programme is essential to increase the capacity of the Park’s Benthic Monitoring Team to effectively conduct surveys and research. Survey results inform Park management and enables sound decision making. Further, trained staff are expected to carry out a Coral Restoration Programme within and outside the MPAs. Plongeurs Du Monde offers training twice a year with focused training for youths within Park communities. Since 2017, 50 youths have been trained through the programme, receiving scuba diving diplomas at various levels. The training intends to raise awareness of underwater life and its importance to community livelihoods. The training enables youths to become ocean ambassadors in their community and creates skills and employment opportunities in the eco-tourism industry. The training will commence again at the end of June 2023 for two weeks, focusing on Dive Master and Open Water Scuba Diver training.
