Launched on the 3rd of May by Mr. H.E. Flavien Joubert, Minister of Agriculture, Climate Change and the Environment, Seychelles, the 5-day intensive WIO-COMPAS certification event came to an end on the 7th of May. Six trained assessors evaluated 15 MPA practitioners’ experience, knowledge, and skills towards certifying them as competent Marine Protected Area Professionals. Candidates were independently evaluated to ascertain their level of competence in their unique roles within the MPA space. Most participants would agree that the rigorous certification process not only tested their professional competence but also their emotional reserve. Luckily, the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA), meticulously planned an exciting field trip for all participants to learn about their coral restoration efforts in St. Anne’s Marine Park, where candidates could demonstrate their skills out in the field and take a much-needed respite from showcasing case studies, portfolios and grueling interviews. The WIO-COMPAS programme has already certified over 116 MPA professionals in the WIO, and is endorsed by IUCN, the International Ranger Federation, and WIO regional governments.
