Kerry Sink
Kerry Sink

Marine Programme Manager, South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)

Prof Kerry Sink is an inspired and dedicated marine conservation practitioner who has led the Marine Programme at the South African National Biodiversity Institute since 2006. Much of her current work is focused on the strengthening and expansion of South Africa’s MPA network. Kerry led the 5 year Offshore Marine Protected Area project (OMPA) to determine a network of spatial management measures, including MPAs, to protect offshore biodiversity and support sustainable use of South Africa’s oceans. She also led the technical team that saw several of the areas identified by OMPA implement in the 20 new MPAs established as part of the Operation Phakisa Oceans Economy initiative in 2019. Kerry used systematic conservation planning approaches and an adaptive, flexible stakeholder engagement process to advance planned MPAs into implementation. Kerry is striving to improve both co-ordination and capacity to support an improved network of MPAs and MPA managers in South Africa. She works at a national level but also supports the management of individual MPAs through the provision of science based advice and by research in several fields spanning coastal and particularly, offshore MPAs. Kerry is keen to involve the public in the exploration and conservation of marine biodiversity in South Africa, the region and the globe. She is the founder of the Southern Africa Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) and is developing new projects to engage and inspire the public in marine conservation. Kerry and her team developed a new website  and film to showcase MPAs in South Africa. Visit www.marineprotectedareas.org.za to explore South Africa’s 42 MPAs. Kerry is a certified MPA PRO Level 3, certified in 2012.
