Senior Community Conservation Warden – Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve System
My name is Magreth Mchome, working as a Marine Conservation Warden at Marine Parks and Reserve Unit. I have over 14 years working experience in Marine Protected Areas where I have been engaged in resource monitoring and community engagement in management of MPAs and recently I have been working at the head office engaged with management activities on marine conservation which includes planning, budgeting and reporting conservation activities in MPAs within Marine Parks and Reserve Unit. I attended WIO-COMPAS certification level 2 assessment conducted in Mombasa Kenya in November, 2018 and certified as MPA professional.
The MPAs Pro helped me by exposing me to different competency areas which helped me a lot especially after my transition from field work activities to management activities. The program allows the assessor to see my personal capacity and advised accordingly. Generally it has helped me to improve my working performance, expose me to ideas outside my comfort zone and advice me on areas to work on to improve my capacity at work.

Marine Conservation Warden, Research and Monitoring – Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park
The year 2020 marks my 20 years experience working in Marine Protected Areas across both the field operations and site management, and is a period that has seen me grow professionally in a range of marine and coastal management affairs.
I have not changed position as senior marine conservation warden – not since I was certified for MPA Pro Level 2 in 2017, but my knowledge and skills gained through the intensive yet highly inductive WIO COMPAS assessment process widely opened my eyes into how an MPA manager oughts to conduct himself as far as MPA operations and/or management are concerned. All these have immensely uplifted my performance turning me into a more reliable asset to my MPA, and now as a ‘stepping stone’ for others particularly the up-comings to excel in matters pertaining to MPA management, and of the individual’s performance in the process.
The two sets of competence criteria are today important ingredients in my training package for university and college students I do supervise in practical training sessions and for professional sharing with the many technical and tourist visitors to my MPA. Becoming an MPA Pro has been nothing but a big push in my conservation career advancement.
I am strong in marine biophysical environment specifically in ecological monitoring with particularly high underwater skills and massive experience in coral reef assessment. I currently lead a team of ecological monitoring of my MPA and her sister MPAs in the country. To my colleagues my slogan as an MPA Pro is “nothing you do positively in the sphere of MPA activities is ever small” which is what the certification, among others, seeks to instill in MPA managers’ professional mindset. I now see active staff participation in planning processes along with an improved reporting in a more meaningful way.

Conservation and Education Manager – Chumbe Island Coral Park
I’m the Conservation and Education Manager of Chumbe Island Coral Park (CHICOP) which was established in 1992 as the first managed marine park in Tanzania and the first private MPA in the world. CHICOP has become an international test case for sustainable private marine conservation funded by ecotourism and my role is a key position within the company that requires a range of competences in order to successfully manage and improve the MPA. Over the last 10 years I have, therefore, gained extensive experience in MPA management, not only working for CHICOP but also playing a decisive supporting role in capacity building and professional advice to other marine conservation initiatives in the country and in the region, for example through the TNC “Reef Resilience Training”.
I hold a Master in Marine Biology from the University of Vienna in Austria and before joining CHICOP I have worked as a Resident Marine Biologist in the Maldives for 3 years where I have managed a coral reef rehabilitation project. My core competencies are self-motivation, teamwork, planning and organizing, listening, and situational awareness.
Being an MPA Pro since 2015 has given me courage and confidence in my daily MPA work. My work has also highly benefited from access to the regional network of colleagues and experts in MPA management and operations since my certification. Moreover, I believe that I’ve become a better leader and was, therefore, able to successfully support CHICOP and our MPA team during major top management changes and subsequent improvements in 2019.
