Western Indian Ocean Certification of Marine Protected Area Professionals (WIO-COMPAS)’s second certification event in Mahe, Seychelles.

The WIO-COMPAS Programme is a certification programme that evaluates MPA practitioners and ensures that they meet the highest standards in the MPA management speciality. WIO-COMPAS is a joint initiative of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) and the Coastal Resources Center (CRC) at the University of Rhode Island (URI).

WIOMSA and in partnership with Blue Nature Alliance is holding the second WIO-COMPAS certification event in Mahe, Seychelles on 2-7 May 2023. We are excited to recognize the nine Level 1 and six Level 2 participants from across the WIO region who will participate in the challenging certification process to become MPA professionals towards better MPA management in the region. Working individually with several professional assessors, the participants will showcase their skills across seven competency areas including 1) MPA Governance, 2) Marine Conservation (MPAs and Other Approaches) 3) Communication and Stakeholder Engagement, 4) Human and Financial Resources Mobilisation and Management, 5) Management Implementation and Effectiveness, 6) Biophysical and Socio-Economic Context, and 7) Leadership, Ethics, and Innovation. We recognize the rigor and passion of these individuals to better marine conservation in the WIO region.
