The Western Indian Ocean region faces significant challenges in effectively managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), with only 40% currently well-managed and similar gaps in community-led conservation efforts. To address this, WIOMPAN is launching a regional, practitioner-led exchange programme aimed at building practical skills, fostering peer learning, and strengthening regional collaboration. The programme will feature site visits, peer training, and the development of action plans, with the first exchange scheduled for August 20-30, 2025, in Seychelles, hosted by the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority. Selected participants from countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritius, and Seychelles will gain insights into sustainable financing, enforcement technologies, coral restoration, and coastal rehabilitation.
This exchange offers a unique opportunity for MPA practitioners and managers to learn from successful models, share expertise, and enhance their capacity in key areas such as enforcement, management effectiveness, and community involvement. Participants will also contribute to peer training, supporting in-country capacity building and regional network strengthening. The programme aims to scale up to five exchanges by 2030, creating a lasting impact on the region’s marine conservation efforts.
