Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) and the Marine Parks and Reserves Unit, Tanzania in Tanga, Tanzania in November, 2021 on a stakeholders meeting for the proposed transboundary conservation area initiative between Kenya and Tanzania.

WIOMSA is currently supporting the development of the spatial conservation plan for the marine TBCA. This spatial plan is crucial to the legal and formal establishment of the TBCA, and will serve as the basis for the corresponding policies, institutional arrangements, and management and operational plans. We are applying the systematic conservation planning process to support the design of the TBCA, and have held two stakeholder workshops in Kenya and Tanzania. The systematic conservation planning process engaged government officials and technical personnel, non-government organisations, private sector, academic institutions and communities in both stakeholder workshops.

Stay tuned for more updates on the TBCA design process.
