With the election of Mr. Allen Cedras, CEO of the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA), as WIOMPAN President, the chapter is poised to lead the network into 2025 with renewed vigor.

In 2024, SPGA marked significant progress in marine protected area (MPA) management. The adoption of EarthRanger software has enhanced the Authority’s ability to make data-driven decisions by integrating historical and real-time data. This development, coupled with the successful completion of the WIOMSA MPA Pro Certification Program by three SPGA staff members, has elevated the organization’s operational capabilities. MPAs under SPGA’s stewardship remain among Seychelles’ most visited attractions, balancing eco-tourism with conservation priorities to foster community engagement.

A major milestone was the initiation of the Green Listing process for Curieuse Marine National Park, one of the country’s most visited MPAs. This step aligns with global efforts to uphold governance and management standards while showcasing effective conservation outcomes.

The Seychelles Coral Festival, another 2024 highlight, brought together experts, stakeholders, students, and the broader community to celebrate the ecological value of coral ecosystems. The festival underscored the need for innovative strategies for coral reef recovery, adaptation, and restoration, reinforcing SPGA’s commitment to biodiversity.

With these achievements, the Seychelles Chapter of WIOMPAN is well-positioned to advance its mission. Under Mr. Cedras’ leadership, the chapter aims to deepen its contributions to marine conservation, both nationally and regionally, ensuring sustainable ocean stewardship for future generations.

The Seychelles Chapter of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Protected Area Network (WIOMPAN) has had a landmark year, spearheading initiatives to strengthen marine conservation and engagement across the region.
