Kenya hosted the National Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) Consultation Forum on August 28th and 29th, 2024, in Kwale County. The forum evaluated the current state of LMMAs in the country, identified key challenges and opportunities, and discussed the LMMA expansion strategy developed by CORDIO East Africa. Insights from the forum helped shape Kenya\u2019s national message for incorporation into the WIO LMMA Action Plan and<\/p>

regional roadmap.<\/p>

Following this, the WIOMPAN Kenya Chapter National Steering Committee Meeting took place on August 30th, 2024. Building on the inaugural gathering in May 2023, which brought together 86 registered members, the meeting focused on strengthening the chapter, collaborative planning, and reporting on marine protected and conserved areas (MPCA) activities in Kenya.<\/p>

During the 2024 Annual Meeting, the steering committee led a workshop to identify priority actions aligned with the WIO MPA Outlook recommendations, laying the groundwork for future conservation efforts.<\/p>

Marine Protected and Conserved Areas (MPCA) remain critical for achieving global biodiversity targets such as SDG 14.5 and Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (K-M GBF). The WIO MPA Outlook 2021 highlighted the region\u2019s progress in effective MPA management, aiming to foster a connected, collaborative network.<\/p>

WIOMPAN was established to facilitate knowledge exchange among MPA practitioners across 10 WIO countries, with country chapters addressing local challenges and goals.<\/p>

The Kenya Chapter remains committed to strengthening collaboration and social connectivity, guided by the WIO MPA Outlook. The meeting developed an action plan and identified five key priorities for 2024, reinforcing Kenya\u2019s dedication to marine conservation.<\/p>
