This initiative, focusing on enhancing collaborative strategies, has yielded significant insights and paved the way for improved conservation practices. The project encompassed various activities, including the mapping and characterization of sea turtle nesting beaches, the evaluation of current conservation efforts, and the development of sustainable strategies involving multiple stakeholders.

Project Activities and Key Findings

The project undertook extensive beach suitability assessments, covering a 155 km stretch of coastline. As of November 2021, the assessments revealed that 39% of the shoreline was deemed suitable for nesting, 46% potentially suitable, and 15% naturally unsuitable. Key factors influencing nesting suitability included gentle beach slopes and minimal obstacles, essential characteristics for successful nesting sites.

Significant nesting activity was recorded in the regions of Watamu and Kipini, underscoring the importance of collaborative conservation efforts among local stakeholders. Despite the presence of challenges such as illegal fishing and trawling, these findings highlighted the critical role of ongoing monitoring and adaptive management in enhancing nesting conditions for sea turtles.

Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement

A crucial aspect of the project was the enhancement of the capacity of six Turtle Conservation Groups (TCGs) through targeted training programs, comprehensive data collection efforts, and the implementation of real-time visualization techniques. These measures have empowered TCGs to take a more active and informed role in conservation activities.

Furthermore, the project engaged stakeholders in the fisheries sector through five Beach Management Units (BMUs) operating across more than ten major landing sites. These units played a vital role in deliberating the influence of fisheries on sea turtle conservation, fostering a collaborative approach to address the intersection of fishing practices and turtle conservation.

Challenges and Recommendations

The project identified several challenges, including high sea turtle mortalities linked to the use of illegal fishing gear and trawling activities. To address these issues and improve sea turtle conservation efforts, the following recommendations were proposed:

Enhancing Resource Availability: Increasing support for grassroots TCGs is crucial to bolster their conservation activities and ensure sustainable practices.

Strengthening Collaboration with Local Authorities: Building the capacity of local authorities through enhanced collaboration will support effective conservation initiatives and ensure compliance with conservation protocols.

Regular Education Programs: Implementing ongoing education programs focused on approved conservation protocols and models will raise awareness and foster community participation in conservation efforts.

Improving Data Collection Mechanisms: Strengthening data collection and sharing mechanisms will provide a robust foundation for informed decision-making and adaptive management strategies.

Conclusion

The “Advancing Sea Turtle Conservation through Enhanced Collaborative Strategies” project has made significant strides in understanding and improving sea turtle nesting conditions in Malindi-Ungwana Bay. By fostering collaboration among stakeholders, enhancing the capacity of conservation groups, and addressing key challenges, the project has laid a strong foundation for the continued protection and preservation of sea turtles in the region. The findings and recommendations from this project provide a roadmap for future conservation efforts, emphasizing the importance of a collaborative, informed, and adaptive approach to marine conservation.

Between July 2021 and April 2024, a groundbreaking project aimed at advancing sea turtle conservation was conducted in Malindi-Ungwana Bay.
