To combat these challenges, the Association d&#8217;Intervention pour le D\u00e9veloppement et l&#8217;Environnement (AIDE) and Moh\u00e9li National Park recently joined forces with the Institut Halieutique des Sciences Marines (IHSM) to share knowledge on coral reef restoration. This exchange of experiences, held in Toliara, Madagascar, from February 2 to 11, 2024, represents a crucial step in fostering collaboration and advancing restoration efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Supported by the RECOS Project<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The field visit was facilitated by the Indian Ocean Commission&#8217;s (IOC) RECOS project, a program designed to support the restoration and conservation of coral reefs across the region. Through the Exchange of Experiences Programme, AIDE and Moh\u00e9li National Park had the opportunity to learn from IHSM&#8217;s expertise in coral reef restoration and management.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>What Was Shared and Learned?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The visit focused on a range of coral reef restoration techniques and strategies. Key topics discussed included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Setting up Coral Nurseries and Artificial Reefs: IHSM experts shared insights into creating coral nurseries, which serve as breeding grounds for coral fragments before they are transplanted to damaged reef areas. Artificial reefs, structures placed underwater to promote marine life, were also explored as a restoration tool.<\/li>\n<li>Coral Cuttings: Participants learned about the process of coral cuttings, where fragments of healthy coral are carefully cut and nurtured to grow into new colonies, helping to speed up reef recovery.<\/li>\n<li>Participatory Community Restoration: A significant aspect of the discussions revolved around engaging local communities in restoration efforts. AIDE and IHSM discussed various participatory approaches to coral habitat restoration, ensuring that the benefits of restoration are felt by the communities that rely on these ecosystems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Exchange of Experiences Programme: Open Until May 2026<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The success of this field visit highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in coral reef restoration. The Exchange of Experiences Programme, part of the RECOS project, remains open to stakeholders in Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) across the Western Indian Ocean region until May 2026.
