On 9th April, Minister of Education Dr. Justin Valentin inaugurated an environmental activity centre at the school, marking an exciting milestone in fostering a new generation of conservationists. The centre, donated by Nature Seychelles, is part of the Locally Empowered Area Protection (LEAP) Project and serves as a hub for the school’s LEAP Junior Club. This initiative aims to empower local communities to play an active role in protecting the Baie Ternay and Port Launay Marine National Parks.

The LEAP Project: Empowering Local Communities

Funded by the German Climate Change Initiative (IKI) through the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the LEAP Project seeks to engage local communities in safeguarding their natural surroundings. Anse Boileau Secondary School was chosen as the site for the environmental activity centre because it serves students from the Port Glaud District, where the Baie Ternay and Port Launay Marine National Parks are located. The new centre will host the LEAP Junior Club’s meetings and provide a space to showcase their work in marine conservation.

An Unveiling to Remember

The inauguration event was attended by an array of guests, including officials from the Ministries of Education and Environment, representatives from Nature Seychelles, the school’s administration, district leaders, students, parents, and members of the LEAP local committee. Since the formation of the LEAP Junior Club two years ago, twenty students from Anse Boileau Secondary School have been actively involved in educational sessions exploring ocean biodiversity and ecosystems within the marine national parks. The club’s activities are facilitated by teachers Marie-Vonne Auguste and Julia Fabien, with support from Nature Seychelles’ staff.

Learning by Doing: Environmental Stewardship in Action

The LEAP Junior Club’s approach focuses on engaging students through both classroom and outdoor learning experiences. Members gain a deeper understanding of key marine habitats and ecosystems while also learning about environmental stewardship. They participate in identifying, monitoring, and addressing local environmental issues, fostering a sense of responsibility and commitment to conservation.

The newly established environmental activity centre will further support the club’s objectives, allowing for more interactive learning sessions and community outreach. The centre also provides a venue to raise awareness about marine conservation among students and the wider community.

Building a Greener Future

During his speech at the inauguration, Minister Valentin highlighted the importance of the LEAP Junior Club in promoting environmental stewardship among students. “By equipping students with the knowledge and tools to address pressing environmental challenges, we cultivate a generation of informed citizens who can make sustainable choices in their everyday lives,” he said.

The school’s headteacher, Jina Labiche, expressed her appreciation for the new centre, acknowledging the teamwork and dedication that made it possible. She urged students and staff to make the most of this valuable resource, emphasizing that it would serve as a catalyst for learning, inspiration, and action.

A Bright Future for Environmental Education

With the launch of the environmental activity centre at Anse Boileau Secondary School, the LEAP Project continues to pave the way for community-based conservation. By involving young people and encouraging their participation in marine conservation efforts, the project aims to ensure the long-term protection of Seychelles’ natural treasures.

Nature Seychelles and the Ministry of Education have a rich history of collaboration, spanning over 20 years, contributing to environmental education through various programs. This partnership underscores the importance of building a foundation for sustainable development, starting with the youth.

As the LEAP Junior Club and its new activity centre take shape, the future of Seychelles’ marine ecosystems looks brighter than ever. Through this initiative, young conservationists are given the tools and knowledge to make a difference, ensuring that the protection of the environment remains a top priority for generations to come.

@NatureSeychelles

A new era of environmental education has begun at Anse Boileau Secondary School in Seychelles.
