\"\"<\/b><\/strong>October 5, 2023 – In a webinar hosted by WIOMSA and the Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), global experts and stakeholders converged to discuss the challenges and opportunities posed by the ambitious 30×30 conservation initiative. Representatives from governments, conservation NGOs, small-scale fishers, and community advocates engaged in a spirited dialogue, focusing on integrating the concerns of local communities and small-scale fishers into the heart of the 30×30 agenda.<\/p>\n

The event began with insightful keynote presentations. Indonesian researcher, Estradivari, emphasized the significance of Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) in marine conservation. Drawing on her experience in Indonesia, she highlighted how innovative measures could safeguard critical marine areas while empowering small-scale fishers through strengthened management rights.<\/p>\n

Renowned expert Hugh Govan stressed the importance of Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) in achieving sustainability. He cautioned against the distraction caused by the 30×30 debate, emphasizing the need to build trust within existing stewardship initiatives.<\/p>\n

Following the keynotes, a thought-provoking panel discussion explored critical questions. The panel emphasized that the 30×30 target could be realized for African oceans and coasts through improved communication about OECMs and participatory design of OECM frameworks. LMMAs were hailed as successful models for marine management to some extent, demonstrating their effectiveness in improving coastal livelihoods and sustainability.<\/p>\n

The webinar concluded with a call to action, urging realistic timelines and accessible conservation measures for local communities.<\/p>\n

In the race for 30×30, the resounding message echoed: don\u2019t rush the process if it means compromising long-term benefits for both people and nature.<\/p>\n
