Joined by an additional 12 virtual participants, and led by Willys Osore, the Warden of Kiunga Marine National Reserve & Dodori National Reserve in Kenya, this gathering aimed to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing among marine conservation professionals, paving the way for a brighter future for Kenya’s marine ecosystems.

Under the theme of “Building Bridges, Sharing Visions,” this annual meeting was a platform for exchanging ideas, best practices, and experiences in marine conservation. The objectives were clear: to strengthen Kenya’s Marine Protected Area (MPA) and Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMA) network, foster a joint management approach, and report on the progress of WIOMPAN, MPAs, and LMMAs in the country.

During the workshop, a national steering committee was nominated, comprising representatives from various sectors, including the government, community groups, NGOs, research institutions, and the Fisheries department. This diverse committee will play a pivotal role in guiding and coordinating marine conservation efforts across the country.

The significance of MPAs and LMMAs in preserving biodiversity was highlighted by Mr. John Wambua, Senior Assistant Director of Kenya Wildlife Service in charge of Coast Conservation Area. He emphasized the importance of building a network that connects individuals from different MPAs and LMMAs, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange to achieve a common goal.

Dr. Arthur Tuda of WIOMSA (Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association) enlightened participants on the value of well-connected LMMAs within a country, emphasizing the need to bring together practitioners with a shared understanding of marine ecosystems to share knowledge and network effectively.

Mr. Francis Okalo of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) emphasized the importance of an integrated seascape approach to conservation. By pooling resources and working towards a common conservation objective, this approach can create a more effective and sustainable impact.

The participants echoed a resounding call for increased engagement and coordination among stakeholders involved in marine conservation efforts in Kenya. By coming together, sharing expertise, and aligning their goals, they aim to enhance the effectiveness of their collective work.

Looking ahead, the WIOMPAN Kenya Chapter is committed to organizing regular webinars, workshops, and training programs to promote continuous learning and capacity-building among its members. As Kenya plays a critical role in the Western Indian Ocean region, the establishment of this network will undoubtedly have a significant impact on promoting sustainable and effective marine conservation practices in the country.

Together, as a united force dedicated to protecting our marine ecosystems, we have the power to create lasting change. Let us continue to build bridges, share visions, and work hand in hand towards a future where the beauty and biodiversity of our oceans thrive for generations to come.

In a ground-breaking event that marked the first physical meeting of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Protected Area Practitioners Network (WIOMPAN) Kenya Chapter, 29 passionate conservationists from the five coastal counties of Kenya came together in Mombasa on June 7th, 2023.
