\"\"Led by Naturalistes de Mayotte<\/u><\/a>, in partnership with the Moheli National Park<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/u>(Comoros),<\/u>\u00a0Centre Universitaire de Formation et de Recherche de Mayotte (CUFR)<\/u><\/a>, Parc Naturel Marin de Mayotte<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(PNMM)<\/u>\u00a0and DroneGo Mayotte<\/u><\/a>, the project is co-financed by the European Union (PO INTERREG V<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Indian Ocean) and seeks to identify sites frequented by dugongs and to understand their habitat.<\/p>\n

From April 24th<\/sup>\u00a0to May 7th<\/sup>, the Moheli<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Park<\/u>\u00a0staff were trained in drone piloting, by DroneGO, with the aim of completing the range of actions concerning the monitoring of dugongs. In parallel, an aerial surveillance campaign of the dugongs of Moheli was conducted to identify sites where they are regularly present. Rangers were also introduced to the intertidal seagrass monitoring methodology and data management protocols being implemented in Mayotte by PNMM. These training sessions aim to standardize the methodologies for monitoring dugong and seagrass in the region, providing spatial and temporal data that are reliable and comparable.<\/p>\n

CUFR is also developing a method for detecting dugongs using environmental DNA. Water samples, will be analysed to identify DNA traces of dugong, thus identifying the sites where they live.<\/p>\n

The exchanges between the islands will continue; a collaboration is even being considered with Madagascar National Parks for the conservation of dugongs in its protected areas.<\/p>\n

Port\u00e9 par Naturalistes de Mayotte<\/u><\/a>, en partenariat avec le Parc National de Moh\u00e9li<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/u>(Comores), le Centre Universitaire de Formation et de Recherche de Mayotte (CUFR)<\/u><\/a>, le Parc Naturel Marin de Mayotte<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(PNMM)<\/u>\u00a0et DroneGo Mayotte<\/u><\/a>, ce projet est cofinanc\u00e9 par l’Union europ\u00e9enne (PO INTERREG V<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Oc\u00e9an Indien) et vise \u00e0 identifier les sites de fr\u00e9quentation et \u00e0 comprendre l\u2019habitat des dugongs.<\/p>\n

Du 24 avril au 7 mai, les agents du Parc de Moh\u00e9li ont \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9s au pilotage de drone, par DroneGO, dans le but de compl\u00e9ter le panel d’actions pour le suivi des dugongs. En parall\u00e8le, une campagne de surveillance a\u00e9rienne des dugongs de Moh\u00e9li a \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9e afin d’identifier les sites de fr\u00e9quentation. Les rangers ont \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 initi\u00e9s aux m\u00e9thodologies de suivi des herbiers intertidaux et aux protocoles de gestion des donn\u00e9es mis en place \u00e0 Mayotte par le PNMM. Ces sessions de formation visent \u00e0 standardiser les m\u00e9thodologies de suivi des dugongs et des herbiers marins dans la r\u00e9gion, en fournissant des donn\u00e9es spatiales et temporelles fiables et comparables.<\/p>\n

Par ailleurs, le CUFR d\u00e9veloppe une m\u00e9thode de d\u00e9tection des dugongs \u00e0 l’aide de l’ADN environnemental. Des \u00e9chantillons d’eau seront analys\u00e9s afin de d\u00e9tecter des traces d’ADN de dugong, ce qui permettra d’identifier les sites o\u00f9 ils vivent.<\/p>\n

Les \u00e9changes entre les \u00eeles se poursuivront; une collaboration est m\u00eame en cours de r\u00e9flexion avec Madagascar National Parks pour la conservation des dugongs dans ses aires prot\u00e9g\u00e9es.<\/p>\n
