Established in 1993, and registered in Zanzibar, Tanzania in 1994 as a non-governmental organization, WIOMSA is a membership association that promotes the interests of marine and coastal science professionals and practitioners in the Western Indian Ocean region. \u00a0\u00a0Our membership\u00a0pool\u00a0is diverse, comprising 1200 regional and international scientists, academic and research institutions, government ministries, non- governmental organisations, management agencies, students and the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>Our mission as a membership association is to bring like-minded individuals, organisations and partners together in order to generate the best knowledge in marine science and then use the results to ensure that the marine environment is understood, protected, enhanced and maintained for the benefit of everyone that works and lives on the coastal areas of the Western Indian Ocean.\u00a0We are also committed to the professional and institutional capacity development of our members.\u00a0WIOMSA achieves these things through its comprehensive research grant\u00a0programme, thorough fostering effective partnerships for action, through the delivery of quality and innovative capacity development initiatives and through the production of world class publications and reoprts. Through the WIOMSA Symposium and other events, the Association facilitates the exchange of information, including demonstrating best practices. All these benefits and resources are open to all WIOMSA members. Student membership is free.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wiomsa.org\/members-portal\/student-members\/\"><strong><u><b>Read more<\/b><\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><b>Individual members<\/b><\/strong>: Marine scientists and other professionals who are nationals of the countries of the Region involved in marine scientific and related activities.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wiomsa.org\/members-portal\/individual-membership\/\"><strong><u><b>Read more<\/b><\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><b>Associate members:\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>Marine scientists and other professionals from outside the Region involved in activities contributing to the objectives of the Association.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wiomsa.org\/members-portal\/associate-membership\/\"><strong><u><b>Read more<\/b><\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><b>Institutional membership<\/b><\/strong>: Available to any institution, company, agency, corporation and organization involved in activities furthering the aims of WIOMSA and whose objectives are not in conflict with the aims of the Association.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wiomsa.org\/members-portal\/institutional-membership\/\"><strong><u><b>Read more<\/b><\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><b>Corporate membership<\/b><\/strong>: Open to any private sector or business involved in activities furthering the aims of WIOMSA and whose objectives are not in conflict with the aims of the Association.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wiomsa.org\/members-portal\/corporate-membership\/\"><strong><u><b>Read more<\/b><\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><b>Fellow membership<\/b><\/strong>: Awarded by WIOMSA to scientists and others in recognition of outstanding work or significant contribution to marine science research in the region. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiomsa.org\/our-work\/recognizing-excellence\/nomination-form-for-fellow-and-honorary-memberships-wiomsa-emerging-scientist-award\/\"><u>Read more<\/u><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><b>Honorary membership<\/b><\/strong>: Conferred by WIOMSA upon individuals who have rendered a notable service to marine science development in the Region. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiomsa.org\/our-work\/recognizing-excellence\/nomination-form-for-fellow-and-honorary-memberships-wiomsa-emerging-scientist-award\/\"><u>Read more<\/u><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><b>Rights and Obligations of Members<\/b><\/strong><br \/>\nEach member of the Association shall have rights and perform such duties as may be prescribed by the General Assembly of the Association, including but not limited to the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Participate fully in the activities of the Association.<\/li>\n<li>Avail him\/herself of the facilities of the Association.<\/li>\n<li>Undertake such obligations and duties as may be assigned by the General Assembly or Board of Trustees<\/li>\n<li>Abide by the terms of this Constitution which shall be the basic guide for the operation of the Association.<\/li>\n<li>Members of all categories shall enjoy the privileges of the Association.<\/li>\n<li>All Members are entitled to vote (one person one vote).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><b>Termination of Membership:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A person shall cease to be a member of the Association upon his\/her death.<\/li>\n<li>A person shall cease to be a member upon his\/her own decision, expressed in writing to the Executive Secretary to withdraw membership.<\/li>\n<li>Any person who without any reasonable cause ceases to continue to participate in the activities of the Association or ceases to pay membership subscription fees shall cease to be a member.<\/li>\n<li>A person shall cease to be a member of the Association because of misconduct detrimental to the Association.<\/li>\n<li>The resignation of any Member shall be communicated to the Assembly as soon as is practicable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Read more in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiomsa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WIOMSA-Constitution-Amended-2013_Final.pdf\">WIOMSA Constitution<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About WIOMSA membership: Membership in WIOMSA\u00a0represents a commitment to the sustainable development and management of coastal and marine resources of &#8230;
