| Grant & Support Received: | MARG I |
| Activity Supported: | Marble distribution in Kuranze, Kwale County towards harnessing non-living resources for the Kenyan blue-economy (MarkBlue) |
| Year of approval: | 2021 |
| Testimonies/stories | Due to the widespread and varied distribution of the rock under investigation in the study area, community engagement in the project was inevitable. Through local community sensitisation meetings held at the study area, a lot of knowledge was shared regarding developments in the blue economy with a focus on Mining. These workshops were mainly aimed at students, and were observed to pique their interest in this lucrative and under-explored area of study. The project has allowed investigation of mineralisation potential of marble in the study area using geochemical analysis methods. Data from this project can be a baseline for further geophysical investigation that can be conducted to quantify the amount of marble in the area. On top of that, it can be reference material in related academic and research fields. Hiring of community assistants during sample collection also positively impacted the community economically. |
