Natural diet, feeding habits and potential use of fresh/brackish water prawns genus Macrobrachium (Family Palaemonidae) as biological control agents of disease vector snails along the Kenyan coast

The first part of the project on the diet of the prawns is complete and we already know what these prawns feed on for informed formulation of artificial feed for mass aquaculture aquaculture to secure sustainable fishing and the success of aquaculture initiatives. The second part of the project is in its tail end with prawn predation on schistosomiasis disease vector snails laboratory and in-situ traps in the dam complete while the enclosure and open water prawn-snails predation experiments in the dam are ongoing. The biocontrol information generated from this study will guide the development of a new strategy for schistosomiasis control and elimination in endemic areas in Kenya for improved health of the coastal people .
